Referred to also as a Porter, Bellman or Bellboy, these employees would help customers with their luggage while checking into or out of a hotel. Frequently, bellhops wear a Bell-boy hat, or uniform similar to other page boys or doormen. The name is taken from the olden days where the hotel's front desk clerk will ring a bell in order to summon an employee, who will jump or "hop" to the attention at the desk to be given instructions. The word "porter" is utilized within the United Kingdom or much of the English speaking world while the term "Bellboy" or "Bellhop" is an American English term.

Usually, porters and bellhops tend to work in hotels as opposed to motels. Similar to every employee within the hospitality business, their main goal is to make sure that the clients enjoy their stay. In various hotels the duties of Bellhops and porters are the same, although normally the porters work outside and Bellhops work inside of the hotel.

The task of the bellhop is to show the hotel guests to their rooms, bring their baggage, and to make certain that the room is in working order. If any equipment in the room is not correctly functioning, Bellhops report back to the maintenance department so that it can be fixed right away.

Bellhops would occasionally be called upon to provide local information and tourist information for customers. They could deliver packages, and deliver drink and food orders to the guest's rooms and run errands for the guests. Bellhops additionally carry luggage for guests who are about to leave.

A bell captain will sometimes supervise lots of bellhops in bigger hotels. Bell Captains train and give assignments to bellhops, deal with any complaints made to their department, and record the Bellhop's work hours for payroll.

Similar to Bellhops, baggage porters take care of baggage and suitcases. They deliver luggage to a guest's room on request and when the customers are ready to leave, they arrange to have the bags shipped and are responsible for transporting them to the loading platform.
